Editor's Review

Crossword Master hooked me faster than I expected — and yes, I judged it by its cover (cute tiles, clean board). This is a turn-based crossword puzzle game where you draw five letters, drop them into clue-filled cells (Scandinavian-style clues live inside the squares), and try to outscore an AI opponent who doesn’t wait around. I’ve binged late-night rounds, cursed at a picture-clue that looked nothing like a giraffe, and once dug myself into a two-hour hole on a sneaky third puzzle (hand sweaty, phone battery low — dramatic, but true).

What I love: the mechanic is tight and oddly tense. Short bursts of decision-making (place this letter now? or hold it for later?) make each turn feel meaningful. Picture clues add personality — some are brilliant, others borderline cryptic — and the scoring rewards building multiple words in one move. Hints exist and they actually nudge you instead of spoon-feeding answers. Auto-save is a small mercy. Also: no time limits. Play slow, play mean, play buzzed — your call. But don’t expect everything to be perfect. Some clue sets repeat across puzzles, the AI can be predictable after a dozen games, and every now and then a tile placement feels unfair (I’m not alone — the Reddit threads agree). I also noticed occasional nags about hints (are they free? not always) — so expect the usual mobile-game monetization dance unless you want to test settings yourself.

Strategy (what worked for me): force cross-overs — hide a big letter until it opens two words at once. Treat picture clues like stubborn friends: ask them questions (mentally), stare at them, then place. Use the deck logic: if you can dump all five letters in one turn, do it. If not, don’t be greedy — sometimes skipping a flashy move leads to a bigger payoff next round. And yes, sometimes luck wins. That’s fine. Not every game is a moral victory.

Bottom line: Crossword Master is not a casual filler with zero depth, nor is it an impossible puzzler that makes you rage-quit. It sits somewhere in the sweet, noisy middle — smart mechanics, occasional rough edges, and enough personality to keep me coming back. If you like crosswords, anagrams, or head-to-head word scrambles (against an annoyingly smug AI), give it a shot. Want me to check ads/IAPs or dig into advanced tactics next? Say the word — I’ll play another round tonight.
