Classic Sudoku app? Yeah — I’ve been playing Sudoku.com enough that my brain felt a little smug (and a little tired) by week two. I like to start mornings with a quick 5-minute puzzle; some nights I rage at the expert level until 1 a.m. (true story: I got stuck on an expert grid for two hours — hand cramped, sweat on the controller-that-wasn’t-a-controller—then suddenly the last number clicked and I shouted like an idiot). This is not a dry ad copy. It’s me, a real player, explaining why this free app both soothes and needles you.

What it actually does well: straightforward 9x9 puzzles, over 10,000 boards, six difficulty tiers (fast to giant), and features that mimic pencil-and-paper — Notes, Highlight Duplicates, Auto-Check, Hints, Unlimited Undos, and auto-save. The puzzles claim a single solution each — and most times that feels true. The UI is clean enough to not get in your way, and the daily challenges + seasonal events give you small goals that actually matter when you’re procrastinating. Also—stats. I stalk my slowest times. Don’t judge me.

What it doesn’t do: it’s not a magic brain trainer that makes you Einstein overnight. Expect ads unless you pony up for premium (I did, after two weeks of being interrupted during a clutch finish). Some expert puzzles are genuinely nasty — like, not just hard, but “did the generator prank me?” hard. And there are tiny UX gripes (notes auto-updating is great until it’s not — sometimes it erases the one guess you wanted to keep). Still, the app lets you play offline, so you can suffer joyfully on a plane or subway without signal.

Verdict: If you want a low-friction, honest Sudoku experience with enough modern helpers to keep you coming back, this is it. If you crave a bare-bones paper vibe, turn off hints and auto-check and suffer through — you’ll get closer to the old-school feel. My advice: try medium and hard to learn patterns, then bait yourself with a daily expert to feel alive. I’m still here. I’ll probably be back tonight. You will too (unless you hate numbers, in which case—nope).
